They sometimes housed between 100 and 500 inhabitants; in some instances, upwards of 1000 people lived in these towns. During the late nineteenth century, mannequin company towns materialised, as enlightened industrialists recognised that many poor employees have been dwelling in appalling situations. These industrialists wished to fight the unsanitary and congested situations widespread to working class districts so as to create better dwelling circumstances for workers. Model company towns similar to Port Sunlight and Bournville have been influential with reference to their building and planning innovation.
Many other companies, espescially in the mining and metal business built housing estates for his or her staff close to existing cities, rather than separate firm towns. A notable example is Siedlung Eisenheim in Oberhausen from the mid-nineteenth century, once residence to 1200 metal smelters of the Gutehoffnungshütte, which is now protected as a historic monument. The mining settlements built across the coal pits of the Ruhr region had been referred to as Zechenkolonien ("pit colonies"). Catalonia, situated in north-jap Spain, has a high density of firm cities, known locally as industrial colonies.
